August FootFall commentary

August 2010 footfall performance is flattered by comparisons against last year. During August 2009, the Swine Flu Pandemic had really started to impact the United Kingdom with the cumulative number of deaths from Swine Flu doubling in August compared with the number to the end of July. Although this was ‘only’ 65 cases, the infection rate was increasing through this period. The media were advising that people should avoid densely populated venues, which drove the August 2009 footfall figures to be the second lowest growth month of that year.

This set of soft comparisons has resulted in a stronger growth performance for August 2010 compared to last year at +1.8%. Month-on-month , performance was only down by -0.2% compared with July 2010.
